KANNAWIDAN: A cultural and historical feast of the Ilocanos

Kannawidan is a festival in the province of Ilocos Sur which commemorates the separation of the two Ilocos provinces. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. This celebration features cultural performances, religious rites, and cookery demonstrations showcasing the best of Ilocano cuisine. Kannawidan is a series of activities aiming at celebrating life and sharing joy.Fiestas and celebrations are returning as the Philippines begins to recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak. Kannawidan 2022, a series of activities aiming at celebrating life and sharing joy, was officially launched by the province administration of Ilocos Sur earlier this month.

There are always activities held at the Kannawidan festival. Everyone anticipates every event and contests, particularly the fireworks display, the streetdancing contests, the opening of the trade show and the pageant "Saniata ti Ilocos," which are the highlights of the festival. Many people gather with their family, friends, and/or loved ones to see the fireworks display. The street dancing contests where towns and cities present their delicacies is the best but unfortunately, because of the ongoing pandemic, street dancing contest is not yet allowed. The trade fair displays the specialties and delicacies of towns and cities in Ilocos Sur. There are furnitures, plants, and foods for sale as well as art displays to admire. Artists are also encouraged to host and participate in the festival, which takes place at night and provides fantastic entertainment for tourists and locals. And this year's Kannawidan festival, some events is held in the same manner as previous years before the outbreak and that is a real pleasure to all.

Fiestas and celebrations are returning as the Philippines begins to recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak, providing Filipinos with a much-needed dose of levity. This year's Kannawidan was a success since a large number of people attended and participated in the events. It is always a joy to celebrate this celebration. Thus, I hope that this festival will continue as everyone joins together to celebrate and share our specialties, culture, and history.
