“Resilience for a Better Country?”

Philippines is one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries. It is regularly impacted by floods, earthquake, typhoons, landslides, volcanoes and droughts. But amidst all of these disasters, Filipinos are being strong and resilient and are capable of surpassing and getting over with these happenings. But why and how?

Every Filipino smile. Whenever there’s a happy occasion to celebrate and even sad occasions or happenings, Filipino always smile. But why does Filipino smile even when something bad and traumatic is happening like disasters, crises, and this pandemic? Is there a reason why Filipinos smile so much? What do their smile hide?

Filipino are ever-happy whatever the situation. We smile when we’re happy, we smile when we’re sad, we smile when we’re angry, we just simply smile at everything. It is now part of our trait or personality as Filipinos. Yes, Filipino are resilient, we are strong and tough. But the problem of this resiliency of the Filipinos is the speed by which we transform trauma into acceptance. And instead of solving the problem, we simply cope or wait for the problem to pass.

Filipino copes with everything, every problem with a smile. I am proud that we are a happy people but what hurts me the most is that we are now used to this pain. It pains me that we just smile to deal with our problems and now are immune to devastating situations. Even now that our country is filled with corrupt officials and leaders that can’t even manage this pandemic properly, we just take it all with a smile on our faces. Our good trait is now a bad care to ourselves.
