“The Rising Cases of Violence Against Children During the Covid-19 Pandemic”

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected and brought major challenges to all of us especially the children. The pandemic is exposing children to increased risk of violence including maltreatment, gender-based violence and sexual exploitation. This violence may be done by your own family and relatives and even through online. That’s why we must prevent this and do all we can to protect the children and put them to safety.

According to research conducted by Save the Children, the incidence of violence against children, mostly by parents and caregivers, has dramatically increased globally during the COVID-19 pandemic as loss of income from lockdown measures have resulted to increased negative feelings and reduced psycho-social well-being in the household. At least one in six children reported violence at home during the pandemic which is mostly in the form of physical and verbal abuse. Also, one in five parents and caregivers similarly reported violence at home.

UNICEF can help prevent and stop violence against children. This organization help families and communities prevent any kind of violence. They prioritize the prevention of violence against children in their homes, at school, and online. They also promote the expansion of services that provide safeguards against violence, such as social welfare and child-friendly justice, and work to ensure that child victims know where and how to get help.

Children must be protected, they ought to be safe during this pandemic. We must do all we can to keep children safe. We must not allow violence, abuse and neglect against children. We must fight for their rights. We must fight for their safety especially during this pandemic.
